Olympic Games : Corporate gold mine or black hole?

The London Olympics are proving one of the most fascinating feeding grounds for companies trying to mine every opportunity to sell their services and promote their image.

They are particularly important for the private sector, as they are set against a backdrop of global recession, where opportunities are few and far between.
Contracts are being allocated for the construction of the East London site, for servicing the site, for transportation, and for providing facilities for media, for athletes and for visitors. As the project moves forward towards 2012 and the basic structure nears completion, opportunities for private sector investors will start to beckon across London.
For foreign companies in the UK, the task of winning gold at the Games can be complex. The stakes could not be higher for the winners of the £11 billion the British government and its agencies LOCOG and the ODA have allocated to the creation and running of the Olympic site and the surrounding panoply of buildings, services and transportation. That said only £1.5 bn worth of contracts remains to be allocated as of the end of February.
One challenge for the international firm is to promote and lobby themselves to UK Government agencies who may have a better understanding of (some would even argue, a preference for) locally devised projects and companies. In today’s economic environment, it would hardly be surprising if there were some in the UK government who regard the Games as a rather acceptable job creation project. It would be equally surprising if the UK Government were not open to the whole gamut of creative ideas and projects, whatever their source. [...]
